If you are suffering from a particularly severe weight problem that repeated diet and exercise attempts have done little to correct, your doctor might consider you a candidate for gastric bypass surgery. However, bear in mind that gastric bypass surgery is rarely ever performed on people who are less than one hundred pounds overweight, or those who have carried the excess weight in question for a fairly short period of time. Again, as with most surgeries, gastric bypass is considered a last resort to correct a problem when all other less invasive methods have failed.
Gastric bypass surgery, sometimes commonly referred to as stomach stapling, involves surgically resecting the stomach area so that far less food is able to be consumed at once, thus reducing both the hunger and caloric intake of the patient. Gastric bypass surgery also includes a slightly less invasive procedure nowadays, which involves placing a restrictive, adjustable band, often called a lap band, around the stomach of the patient in question. While some incisions will still need to be made in order to put the lap band into the body, this procedure does not involve slicing and stitching the actual stomach itself, leading to a much shorter recovery period in most cases. Talk to your doctor about which type of gastric bypass surgery is right for you, and then start looking in your area for a good surgeon to perform the procedure.
Call your insurance company and ask them to give you a list of surgeons who regularly perform gastric bypass surgery in your area that accept your particular plan. Once you have your list of qualified surgeons, call the hospitals that these surgeons practice in, and ask which of the doctors on your list have the best gastric bypass surgery success rates. Choose the best gastric bypass surgeon you can afford, and make an appointment for the procedure as soon as possible.
