To better understand the concept of vpn, imagine being in a cave that is completely closed off from the out side world. The only way to access the outer world would be to create a tunnel, which is a passage that would allow access both in and out of the cave, which is a solid, secure place. In computer terms, the cave is the equivalent of a private network. A controlled space with solid walls placed around it to prevent unwanted intrusion. The tunnel is exactly what a vpn does for a private network: It is a single point to point connection that allows access and whatever transfers you choose from out side of the secure network chamber.
In order to implement a vpn solution at your company, there ideally needs to be a firewall in place that has the capability to provide vpn connectivity as well as commensurate licensing owned that will provide the legal use of the feature of the firewall. The vpn feature is added to client computers in most cases through the installation of a vpn client program. This program adds needed protocols, encryption and decryption algorithms to the client machine so that it is capable of establishing the tunnel and communication with the server, which is what the firewall will act as.
The vpn tunnel is created upon the initiation of a connection by the computer user. This entails the inputting of a user name and password by the user that is used to verify their authorization to make such a connection. Once this has been authenticated, the session is established and the connection succeeds. The end user can then access resources that are part of the internal corporate local area network from any where in the world with an internet connection that allows transmission of data over the network ports used by the vpn client. Intranet sites, network shares and network applications all are accessible through a vpn connection.
